I was immediately impressed with Civilization 6 for Mac. The game was released on October 21, 2016, for Windows, but Aspyr pulled some kind of record and managed to surprise us with a full Mac release only 3 days later.

And they didn’t stop there. They continue to deliver all the latest DLC and updates, making sure Civ 6’s Mac version remains as close to the Windows version as possible. This is one of the reasons why Civ 6 is one of the finest strategy games for Mac up-to-date.

But in spite of the great support, Aspyr has often required additional time to update the MacOS version of the game. This normally wouldn’t be a big deal, but when Mac and Windows versions fall out of sync, cross-platform multiplayer is disabled.

And unfortunately, that was often the case, until recently.

What’s new with Civilization 6 on Mac? Aspyr finally managed to update the game and enable cross-platform multiplayer for the first time! You can read more about it below.

What is Civilization 6? Is it worth it?

Civilization 5, the previous entry in the series, was a tough act to follow. When it was released, it completely revolutionized the franchise. It improved combat mechanics, reinvented the hex system, and proved that Civ games could still be perfected. It was such a success developer Firaxis warned that Civ 6 wouldn’t bring drastic changes to the formula.

Still, Civ 6 delivered enough improvements and new features to make a name for itself. It introduced cities that physically expand across the map, specific districts and cities, active research in technology, leaders that make decisions based on their historical traits and more.

And the game got even more new features with its Rise and Fall expansion.

Some users have complained about the game (by the way, the most popular user review comes from a guy that played the game for 1,500 hours), but all critics agree that Civ 6 is undeniably an excellent strategy game:

About Civilization 6’s Mac version

These are the official Civilization 6 Mac system requirements:

  • Operating System: 10.11 (El Capitan) and 10.12 (Sierra)
  • Processor: 2.7 GHz Intel Core i5
  • Memory: 6 GB
  • Hard Disk Space: 15 GB
  • Video Card: Radeon HD 6790, GeForce 775M or Iris Pro with 1 GB VRAM

Notice that these are quite high, especially for a turn-based strategy game. If you wonder whether your machine can run it, we tested it on 5 different machines for our official Mac performance review.

Cross-platform multiplayer, finally!

Civ 6 for Mac has received every update so far, including the free updates full of quality of life improvements and the paid DLC with new Civilizations. The problem, however, is that they take too long and cross-platform multiplayer remains disabled.

Well, we have good news. On July 20, 2018, Aspyr finally made cross-platform multiplayer between Mac and Windows possible:

Cross-platform multiplayer is now available between Mac and Windows on Steam. That’s right!  Download the latest update of Sid Meier’s Civilization VI and conquer together online now!

The lack of cross-platform multiplayer was, of course, particularly frustrating because there are few online gamers on Mac compared to Windows.

Finding online buddies to play with should be much easier now! Kudos to Aspyr for the work done!
