No Man’s Sky is now available on Mac

by | Jun 1, 2023

No Man’s Sky is still one of the most popular and beloved games out there, mainly due to the amazing support and numerous free updates it routinely receives. Plus, the Mac reveal came on stage at WWDC. Needless to say, it was massive news for the entire Mac community.

After months of silence, the game was finally released for macOS today, June 1, 2023.

No Man’s Sky Mac release date

No Man’s Sky was released on macOS on June 1, 2023, on both Steam and the Mac App Store.

While Resident Evil Village was released on macOS months ago, not much was said about No Man’s Sky for most of 2022. The game’s Mac development was hinted at here and there, but many were left wondering if the game’s port would actually happen. However, developer Hello Games finally revealed the game’s release date on the same day of its release:

This is what Hello Game’s founder, Sean, had to say about the game’s Mac release:

No Man’s Sky has been built from the ground up with a new rendering pipeline to take full advantage of Metal and Apple silicon. In addition to the Apple silicon Mac lineup, it also runs on select Intel-based Macs.

Expect fast loading times using the Mac internal SSD. Consistent performance across the full range of Macs is possible through MetalFX Upscaling. Metal 3 support allows No Man’s Sky to achieve console quality graphics whilst maintaining battery life on laptops and lower end devices.

Mac System Requirements

These are the game’s system requirements:

  • Requires a 64-bit processor and operating system
  • OS: macOS Monterey 12.3
  • Processor: Intel i5
  • Memory: 8 GB RAM
  • Graphics: Radeon Pro 570X 4GB
  • Storage: 15 GB available space

Note that support is not limited to M1 and M2 Macs.

About No Man’s Sky: Why is it a big deal?

You may be wondering why there is so much hype around this announcement. There are really two reasons why.

First, the intial reveal was a big deal because No Man’s Sky was presented alongside Resident Evil Village. These are two excellent games that have been critically acclaimed by critics and gamers alike. Many consider Village the best Resident Evil to date, and No Man’s Sky remains the best comeback story in gaming history.

These are the two most high-profile games announced for Mac in more than a decade.

Second, this is a big deal because convincing such high-profile developers to port their games to macOS and reveal it during Apple’s WWDC conference means Apple can truly take Mac gaming to the next level if they decide to make it a priority.

This partnership could also show other developers how capable Macs have become in terms of graphics performance, thanks to Apple Silicon.

What’s next

Stay tuned as we test and benchmark No Man’s Sky on Mac on the days to come!

We’ve known about this since their announcement in June, is there any new info? Like a definitive date to look forward to? Or should we all just assume “later this year” means new years eve at this point?

Unfortunately Sean Murray has forgotten to finish the port so it wont be out until next year

The game wasn’t released in 2022. So, logically, it won’t be released in 2022 and may be released in 2023. Good to know… It would have been difficult for me to come to that conclusion on my own.

Very glad you wrote a one page article to set that straight.

This was an update of the original article to take into account the latest official information from Apple. As it was shared last week, it is still a confirmation and not just an assumption.

The real news is this will be a launch title for VR headset. Won’t release for Mac until then.

It isn’t on the Mac App store, it’s currently Steam only. Any idea of when it will be available on the App Store?
