How to Play Overwatch 2 on Mac + M1 Benchmarks

by | Mar 26, 2024

Blizzard Entertainment’s Overwatch 2 has had quite a turbulent release. With the PC version showing countless bugs and glitches, it felt like a far cry for the game to ever be released on macOS.

However, surprisingly, with the help of CrossOver and a few open-source patches, Overwatch 2 is now finally playable on Apple Silicon devices. In this article, we’re going to go over how exactly you can play Overwatch 2 on Mac alongside our benchmarks that explain whether it is worth it for your device.

Can You Play Overwatch 2 on Mac?

Yes, you can play Overwatch 2 on Mac with CrossOver 24 and the Marqasa Patch. While the game was playable before, there were a lot of bugs and errors, particularly revolving around missing cursors and faulty mouse acceleration which led to an unenjoyable experience.

Overwatch 2 still does not have native macOS support. However, with recent updates, it now is playable on even the base MacBook Air M1 with decent FPS. (More on that later.)

Genshin Impact macOS support

How to Play Overwatch 2 on Mac

Here are the steps you need to follow to play Overwatch 2 on Mac:

  • Install CrossOver 24 on Mac, you can opt for a free trial before you purchase it.
  • Install Battle.net and Overwatch as usual
  • Install the Marqasa Patch
  • Download, this DKVK cache
  • Now, head to CrossOver, click on your OverWatch 2 bottle and place the newly downloaded DKVK cache in this path: Program Files (x86)/Overwatch/_retail_/.
  • Open Overwatch 2, and wait for the DKVK message present at the bottom left of your screen to go away before you start playing.

OverWatch 2 should now run on your Mac. But, before you get started, here are a few graphics settings we recommend you change:

  • Dynamic Render Scale: Off
  • Render Scale: Custom
  • In-game Resolution: 50
  • Reduce Buffering: On
  • Frame Rate: Custom
  • Graphics Quality: Low
  • High Quality Upsampling: Default

You can change your graphics settings depending on your machine. However, if you are playing on a base M1 / M2 machine, these are great eSports settings that guarantee high FPS regardless of your device.

We recommend you start off with these settings and work your way up until you hit a sweet spot between FPS and fidelity.

Overwatch 2 on Mac: Benchmarks and Performance

We have been very pleasently surprised with the benchmarks so far for Overwatch 2 on the Mac, especially because of how abysmal the performance was prior. Here’s a quick look at the benchmarks for Overwatch 2:

Device Used Resolution Settings FPS
MacBook Air M2 1920×1080 Recommended Settings 60
MacBook Air M1 1920×1080 Recommended Settings 55-60
MacBook M1 Pro 2560×1400 Recommended Settings 150

As you can see, Overwatch 2 is playable on the M1 Air, being capped at the 60 FPS mark. This means that all other MacBooks like the M2, M3 and higher-end variants like the M3 Max and M2 Pro will be able to run the game without any issues.

As of yet, there have been no graphical glitches or stutters with the game. However, controller support seems to be slightly buggy, with the Xbox Controller not working at times.

You will also need to update your Mac to macOS Sonoma or above to be able to run Overwatch 2 with CrossOver 24. Besides that,

What do you mean? Bootcamp is and will probably always be free. But you have to purchase a Windows license (or use a trial) for it to work…
