CrossOver Mac Games: Windows games supported on M1 Macs

by | Oct 20, 2022

Running Windows games on Mac is absolutely possible thanks to excellent third-party apps such as CrossOver and Parallels. However, not every game will work, and in some cases, you’ll need to find “hacks” in order to get decent performance.

While other sites opt for extremely long lists of games that may or may not run on Mac using CrossOver, we went in the opposite direction, and only featured games that we know run well (or great) on M1 using CrossOver.

As a reminder, this is how we describe the different levels of performance:

  • Below 20 FPS: Unplayable: Laggy gameplay, full of stutters and slowdowns.
  • 20-30 FPS: Poor: Can be OK in slow-paced games. Still, not optimal.
  • 30-60 FPS: Good: Acceptable for most (most gaming consoles do this).
  • 60+ FPS: Excellent: Fluid gameplay, with no perceivable stutters.

Why CrossOver?

CrossOver used to be quite difficult to install and set up, and bugs when trying to run a Windows game were rampant. But CrossOver has improved dramatically over time, especially since the release of M1 Macs.

CrossOver has never been easier to use and the quantity of Windows games it can run flawlessly these days is staggering. We cover CrossOver in depth, including a step-by-step installation guide here

Native games: The easier choice

It goes without saying, but if you dislike dealing with occasional bugs or having to find “hacks” to get decent performance out of a game, you’ll be better off only focusing your time on games that run natively on macOS.

This list features all the most popular games that can run natively on macOS, specifically, Apple Silicon machine.

M1 & M2 support: Your mileage will vary

The Performance results above were achieved by running a combination of different Mac models. In some cases, the main machine used was a base M1 MacBook Air; in other cases, an M1 Pro MacBook Pro. As can be expected, running these games on M1 Pro, M1 Max or even M1 Ultra will result in vastly superior performance.

However, if a game is highlighted above as having Good Performance, it means it can also run on a base M1 Mac… Probably at lower settings and resolutions, but it will still run well. As we continue testing CrossOVer games on Apple Silicon Macs, we will create dedicated resource pages per game to provide much more detailed test results. Stay tuned!
