by | Jan 24, 2022

God of War (Windows) runs on M1 Macs using CrossOver.

[toc] Macs with Apple Silicon processors are revolutionizing the entire platform, including gaming. But every now and then, you’ll want to play a game on your M1 Mac that simply does not support macOS.

God of War is one of those massive games you wouldn’t want to miss, but with CrossOver, we can confirm it runs great on macOS.

God of War M1 Mac support

The Windows version of God of War can run on M1 Macs using CrossOver.

All credit goes to nas. The game was initially not running on Mac using CrossOver due to compatibility issues between CrossOver and its Windows 7 setup, but NAS figured out the solution. This post will walk you through the entire process.

What is CrossOver? CrossOver is a virtualization tool that allows you to run Windows apps and games on M1 games without needing a Windows license.

If you’re interested in giving CrossOver a try, you can download it here.

How to run God of War on Mac using CrossOver

First you’ll need to patch the God of War application created using CrossOver. This may sound intimidating, but follow these steps, and God of War will work on your M1 Mac. Trust us!

  1. You’ll need the IDA freeware app for ARM Mac here.
  2. Find it on your Downloads folder, open it and install it
  3. Open the installed app (from your Desktop shortcut, for example)
  4. Within the app, hit New (Dissasemble a new file)
  5. Find your God of War application folder
  6. Press Ok on “Portable Executable”

Now the next steps would be much too long to describe in text, therefore I recommend you watch this excellent YouTube tutorial instead.

Resolution problems within macOS

There are reports that the game forces the wrong resolution and it can’t be changed in-game. Until CrossOver releases a dedicated patch to solve this, the best solution is to force your Mac to use a 16:9 resolution.

The easiest method is to simply use the SwitchResX app. This is a great tool that definitely gets the job done.

It’s a free try-out app, though, which is fully functional for only 10 days.
