Shooter BioShock Remastered is now Available for Mac

by | Aug 24, 2017 | Horror

And it is with great pleasure I share this with you: BioShock Remastered is now available on Mac.

It seems everyone is doing remasters these days, but BioShock Remastered for Mac is a big deal.

The original BioShock was a monument to gaming. It had excellent gameplay, story, and graphics. It was one of the few games that were both a fun shooter and a truly scary game. Along with Alien: Isolation, this is one of the best horror games for Mac.

Add to that better graphics and you get a game that can compete with the latest shooters any day of the week.

Feral Interactive was behind BioShock Remastered Mac version and release it on August 22, 2017, to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the game’s original release.

BioShock Remastered on Mac: Everything you need to know

According to Feral’s press release, BioShock Remastered for Mac features improved graphics running in 1080p. With the Windows version supporting 4K resolution, I wonder why the Mac version would run at barely 1080p.

Update: Feral Interactive reached out to confirm that the game will support a huge range of resolutions, going all the way to 5K. You will be notified in-game that higher resolutions may result in a performance hit.

According to a report from The Verge, this is what you can expect, graphics wise:

BioShock is unambiguously upgraded: textures are finer, images higher-resolution, effects like water and fire more convincing.

Originally developed by Irrational Games for Windows and console, BioShock is set in the decaying underwater city of Rapture. This is a game that won perfect scores from many critics, awards, and is one of my personal favorite horror games and shooters.

I haven’t been so excited about a remaster in a long time (sorry StarCraft).

To run BioShock Remastered, you will need a 2.4Ghz Intel Core i5 processor running macOS 10.12.5, and 8GB of RAM.

The game is supported on the following models:

  • All 21.5” iMacs since late 2013 (1GB Nvidia GT 750M Models are not officially supported)
  • All 27” iMacs since late 2013 (1GB Nvidia GT 755M Models are not officially supported, but Late 2012 models with 2GB Nvidia 680MX graphics cards are)
  • All 13” MacBook Pros since late 2016
  • All 15” MacBook Pros since late 2013
  • All Mac Pros since late 2013

The following Macs are capable of running the game but do not consistently meet the standards required for official support:

  • All 21.5″ iMacs since early 2013
  • All 27” iMacs since late 2012 with a 1GB graphics card
  • All 13” MacBook Pros since mid 2012
  • All 15” MacBook Pros since mid 2012 with a 1GB graphics card
  • All MacBook Airs since mid 2012
  • All MacBooks since early 2015
  • All Mac Pros since 2009 with an AMD 7950 (Mac Edition) graphics card

BioShock Remastered is already available from the Feral Store or Steam for $19.99. The original BioShock for macOS will continue to be available from the Mac App Store.

”Update: Feral Interactive reached out to me to confirm the Mac version will only support 1080p.”

    Did they say why?

    • Ric

      I’m afraid they did not.

      • Fleet Admiral Butter

Did they mention if it was going to be using Metal 2?

        • Ric

I’m afraid they did not. I also have the feeling devs prefer not to really mention or focus on the use of Metal and just point gamers to the final system requirements…

        • platypus_devil

Metal 2 hasn’t been released yet, it only comes with the next OS High Sierra.

Given it’s coming soon and before High Sierra is released I doubt it uses Metal 2 as that would mean nobody could play it on release day!

            Right you are!

As for Metal, we talked about it with regards to BioShock Remastered a couple of weeks ago, but not on our website so some of you may have missed it. The game will be using Metal, which we’re pretty excited about.

          • Ric

Excellent! Thanks for clearing that up for us 🙂

          • [FERAL] Ellie

            Any time. :]

          • Fleet Admiral Butter

Thanks for the reply! I wasn’t paying too much attention to the date…

If we already own the Mac version of Infinite on Steam, will we automatically get Remastered version or will it be a seperate purchase?

          • Ric

You are correct sir. I was referring to the current implementation of Metal but didn’t pay attention to the “2” on @fleetadmiralbutter:disqus ‘s comment.

          • platypus_devil

Thanks for replying and I’m glad Ellie confirmed everything 🙂

This what I was thinking: New textures are 1080p, this doesn’t mean the game run max in 1080p, probably it shines in 4K thank to 1080p textures.
    Anyway don’t know.

    • Ric

You’re probably right. Feral didn’t mention anything regarding the actual textures resolution but they did confirm it will go all the way up to 5K.

    • platypus_devil

It’s more likely 1080p was mentioned as that was the resolution that consoles run at and this game was remastered for consoles first so it was optimised for that resolution. However both Feral and the Steam page say it runs at 4K etc
