Confirmed: Counter-Strike 2 will not support macOS

by | Oct 12, 2023

We were extremely happy to see that Counter-Strike 2 had been released for Mac on the very same day it was released for Windows, September 27, 2023.

Unfortunately, it was all a mistake from developer Valve, who uploaded the wrong version for macOS. The macOS version of the game has now been delisted from Steam. But the question remained: Is Counter-Strike 2 coming to Mac anytime soon?

Counter-Strike 2 Mac Release

We first heard that Counter-Strike 2 was on the horizon back in April 2023, but no mention of a macOS version could be found in the lead-up to this release. It turns out there was a reason for that: Valve had no intention to support macOS. This was confirmed by Valve earlier this week on the game’s FAQ:

As technology advances, we have made the difficult decision to discontinue support for older hardware, including DirectX 9 and 32-bit operating systems. Similarly, we will no longer support macOS. Combined, these represented less than one percent of active CS:GO players.

Counter-Strike 2 was released for Windows on September 27, 2023. For a few hours, the game appeared as available for macOS too, and could even be downloaded, but it was clearly a mistake.

Is Counter-Strike 2 coming to Mac?

Counter-Strike is one of the most popular FPS games ever released. And as a new update to Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, featuring better graphics and improved gameplay experiences, the expectations surrounding a macOS version of CS2 were high.

But is it coming to macOS?

Unfortunately, it is now clear that Counter Strike 2 will never come to macOS. There was hope, as MacOS-specific files were found within the game’s Steam depot. This was proof that Valve has worked on a macOS version of the game. But these Steam Depots are most likely proof that the developer initially explored a macOS version but abandoned it soon after.

CS: GO: The Only Alternative

CS: GO on macOS will have a legacy version that will remain available until January 1, 2024. Until then, CS: GO will have all of its features except for official matchmaking. After January 1, 2024, CS: GO will be taken offline, and Counter-Strike on macOS will be no more.

    This was the one games I could play with my brothers & now it’s just fucked. I really hope they make it playable on MacBook silicon soon. The devs seems to be pumping out updates very fast; it was also just released so maybe in the near future it wont be a problem. still… what to heck bro.

    Honestly, I think the reason they overwrote CS:GO, as opposed to making a new game page, was only for two reasons:

    1. To maintain the player base—I’m sure they don’t want to split people between 2 CS games, particularly if the old one is better than the new one (which some of the reviews are indicating)

    2. To keep the ‘very positive’ review score. It wouldn’t be good for valve if their new game was received poorly—the servers would die and the game would fail.

    We lose a game because they don’t have confidence that their new game can be legitimately successful…

    It makes no sense…. just make a 64bit for ARM or Universal… no sense from ValvE.

      Uh… If it would be a “just make it” why not everybody “just make” a version of their program for GNU/Linux? 🙂
      Unfortunately, to create a portable program, you should use portable libraries and standards language features. Unfortunately:

      – on windows we have DirectX. Or OpenGL. Now Vulkan. But a lot of people prefer to use DirectX because it’s simpler;
      – on GNU/Linux we have OpenGL or Vulkan;
      – on MacOS/iOS we have Metal2

      and then you have to test, obviously. And (well done) testing takes usually between 40% and 55% of total development time. For a platform.

      Now you can say: “but use an engine!”. Yep. And now the problem is moved to another level.

    One day the steam automatically updated my CSGo to CS2 and then it said “failure”. And I lost my current CSGo and could not play CS2. How to get my CSGo back on iMac?
