We picked up this project on Reddit, and while we rarely cover Kickstarter projects anymore, we decided to make an exception and give this interesting and fun project a shoutout.
Youngers gamers may be completely unfamiliar with text-based adventures, but this remains a surprisingly engaging genre that deserves more attention. Enter Andromeda Acolytes.
From a text adventure veteran
Andromeda Acolytes is being developed by Wade Clarke, a developer with a long history of making text adventure games since the 1980s.
Author of award-winning G-rated adventures like Six (2010), culty R-rated horror ones like Leadlight Gamma (2015), and The Music Room section of Lovecraftian horror mega-adventure Cragne Manor (2017), he’s bringing his latest project to Kickstarter.
Andromeda Acolytes’ Kickstarter
As described on the official Kickstarter page, Andromeda Acolytes is a long-form text adventure game that will represent one of Wade’s visions for a state-of-the-art text adventure game. Andromeda Acolytes aims to be a big, multi-chapter, multi-PC sci-fi adventure featuring an adult narrative and gaming experience that will be unique to this medium.
In Andromeda Acolytes, you play all four heroines. Type your commands and read what happens next as you negotiate underwater mechs, AIs, abandoned cities, crime, friendship, suspense, horror, humor, an art exhibition, virtual realities, and a tank. This is a prose gaming experience offering all the inner-world power of a novel plus the fine-grained puzzle and world engagement of gaming. The only graphics are in the automap!
Mac support
The Andromeda Online project is still ongoing (it has 8 more days to go as of today), but if it success, it plans to support macOS too:
The game will come in the form of an app for all modern desktop systems – PC, Mac (El Capitan (10.11)+ on Steam) and Linux – thanks to the Lectrote framework developed by Andrew Plotkin for his Hadean Lands Kickstarter twelve years ago.
You’ll also be able to run its Glulx format story file in an alternate interactive fiction interpreter of your choosing. This method allows Mac users on older macOS versions to run the game, or Linux users who have any trouble with the app version.
