Did you know you can run Nintendo Switch games on macOS? This isn’t necessarily for the faint of heart, as some of these games will need some tinkering around, but the ones that work well run beautifully on an Apple Silicon Mac.
Today, we cover how to run Super Mario 3D World on an M1 Mac.
Can you play Super Mario 3D on Mac?
You can definitely play Super Mario 3D World on a Mac, albeit with some graphical glitches (and provided you have an Apple Silicon M1 or M2 Mac).
To be clear, Switch games were not meant to run on macOS. The only reason this is possible is thanks to an emulator called Cemu. Cemu is an application that was originally created to emulate Wii U games, but it can certainly run several Switch games. In fact, some of them run great.
This is, in fact, the first time a modern Mario game runs this smoothly on a Mac. The same can’t be said about best-sellers from other consoles, such as Jak And Daxter, for example (which is about to get a AAA movie, by the way).
What is an emulator? Are they legal? These two questions are so common, it’s better to tackle them from the start. Emulators are 100% legal. These are normal applications that serve a legal purpose. Downloading ROMs (“games’) is illegal, however. This post assumes you own the games you’re trying to run on macOS.
How to play Super Mario 3D World on Mac with Cemu
To run the game, you’ll need to download, install, and set up Cemu. This guide covers all the basics: Installing Cemu (macOS).
Can YOUR Mac run Super Mario 3D World? Benchmarks!
According to Emiyl, the main dev behind Cemu, the game runs on macOS:
Runs well, with minor graphical glitches on most levels, except some major graphical glitches on boss fights which make it nearly impossible to beat. Hidden Luigi sprites are not rendered due to missing R5G5B5A1_UNORM decoder.
You can see the game running on an M1 Max with 32 GB RAM:
Super Mario 3D World benchmarks:
- M1 Max with 32 GB RAM: 3440×1440 resolution: 60 frames per second (video above)
- 2020 MacBook Air: 1920×1080 resolution: 60 frames per second (source)
As a reminder, this is how we describe the different levels of performance:
- Below 20 FPS: Unplayable: Laggy gameplay, full of stutters and slowdowns.
- 20-30 FPS: Borderline: Can be OK in slow-paced games. Still, not optimal.
- 30-45 FPS: Playable: Acceptable for most (most gaming consoles do this).
- 45-60 FPS: Smooth: Fluid gameplay, with no perceivable stutters.
- 60+ FPS: Very Smooth: For hardcore and professional players, a luxury for most.
