With the game being so popular and not receiving any official macOS support, thankfully, it can still be played on the Mac with the help of CrossOver. In this article, we go over how exactly you can do so with benchmarks that indicate whether it even is worth playing on your Mac.

Yes, you can play Alone in the Dark on macOS. Although the game is not officially supported on macOS, you can still play it using virtualization tools like CrossOver.
We’ve already tested Alone in the Dark and can confirm that the game runs well without any significant issues or glitches to speak of.
You can attribute the fact that Alone in the Dark runs well on CrossOver to Apple’s Game Porting Toolkit, which has allowed for almost out-of-the-box support for many Windows titles as soon as they are released, with Alone in the Dark being another addition to those list of games.

How to Play Alone in the Dark on Mac?
You can play Alone in the Dark on Mac using CrossOver. First, download and install CrossOver. After doing so, purchase a copy of the game and then proceed to open it as normal. The game does not require you to go into any configuration files and is supported out of the box with CrossOver.

Alone in the Dark is a relatively demanding game. Because of this, it won’t run well on base-level Macs. Here’s what we used to test the game:
Mac Used: MacBook Pro 16″ M1 Max
Method: CrossOver 24 (24.0.1) with Steam version of the game.
Here are some quick benchmarks we’ve gotten with Alone in the Dark running on Mac using CrossOver:

Using Medium to High settings, it is clear that Alone in the Dark is playable on Macs that provide equivalent or better performance than the M1 Max. Performance at full screen is quite smooth as well.
While it doesn’t hit the 60 Hz mark at any point, there are no stutters whatsoever except the ocassional glitch here and there, particularly with David’s beard looking odd at certain instances. Nothing to complain about, though.

You should play Alone in the Dark on your Mac if you have an M1 Max or a better Apple Silicon chip. If you have an Apple M1, M1 Pro, M2 or M3, you should not play the game as the experience will be extremely laggy and playable at certain points.
As of yet, CrossOver has sitll not been officially updated for Alone in the Dark. This means that there is a very high chance that optimizations down the line will improve the performance of Alone in the Dark on macOS. However, we still don’t expect the game to be playable on the base M1 Air anytime soon.
Thankfully, you can test out whether the game works well on your Mac before you purchase CrossOver. The tool has a 14 day trial, letting you test Alone in the Dark out before you actually shell money out.
Is Alone in the Dark Coming to Mac?
No, Alone in the Dark is not going to be officially released on the MacBook anytime soon. This is because the game has been developed by Pieces Interactive and THQ Nordic, and both developers have not released any Mac native ports as of yet.
Plus, the macOS gaming space is still in its infancy. So, not a lot of players exist that’ll be playing a game like Alone in the Dark even if it is released. So, we don’t expect the game to be launching for the Mac anytime soon.
