Blizzard’s stellar strategy game, StarCraft 2, is now free-to-play.

This game shouldn’t need an introduction. The follow-up to one of the most famous RTS in gaming history, StarCraft 2 is one of the finest strategy games for Mac.

The game used to have a free Starter Edition that offered parts of the game, but this change is a big deal as it transforms StarCraft 2 for Mac into a legitimate free game without sneaky microtransactions (unlike a certain evil company that does Star Wars games…).

Blizzard wanted to make thing simple and succeeded. This is what the new free-to-play StarCraft 2 includes:

  • The original Wings of Liberty campaign. If you picked up Wings of Liberty previously, you’ll receive the second installment in StarCraft II’s campaign, Heart of the Swarm, for free.
  • Access to ranked multiplayer, complete with all of the multiplayer units available in the game. All you have to do to unlock it permanently is earn 10 First Wins of the Day in Unranked or Versus A.I. play.
  • Current and upcoming Co-op Commanders are available to play for free up to level five, and the level restriction for weekly mutations has been removed.

StarCraft 2 Mac release

Blizzard’s Tim Morten, production director on StarCraft 2, said:

We wanted to cut through that confusion and announce that StarCraft II is free-to-play. We spent a lot of time thinking about the right way to do this.

I think we can agree they succeeded.

StarCraft 2 on Mac: Everything you need to know

As a reminder, these are the game’s minimum system requirements:

  • OS: 10.10
  • Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo
  • Video: NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M or ATI Radeon HD 4670 or better
  • Memory: 4 GB RAM
  • Storage: 30 GB available HD space

From experience, modern machines, including MacBooks, should be able to handle this game just fine. I’ll try to run some tests and report back. If you’re looking for other real-time strategy games to play, you should check out Company of Heroes 2.

You can grab the new free-to-play StarCraft 2 from Blizzard’s official site.
