Subnautica is now available on Mac

It’s hard to keep track of all the games coming out, especially when they’ve been on Steam Early Access (read: Beta) for a long time. Plus, the quantity of games released each year is increasing so fast, it’s getting ridiculous.

I gave up on trying to cover them all, but every now and then, something like Subnautica for Mac occurs and I just have to drop everything and check it out.

Putting aside the fact the game is about one of my favorite activities ever (diving FTW), Subnautica is adventure game that takes place on an alien oceanic planet. This is a massive open-world game that invites you to explore an underwater world while doing your best to survive.

Indeed, survival is an important element in this game and you’ll have to scavenge, craft equipment, pilot submarines, and more. Oh, and pay attention to the many creatures you'll find underwater. Most of them are friendly, but some others... not so many.

You can find the game on Humble Bundle.

About Subnautica's Mac version

Did I mention Subnautica is a beautiful game too? The game looked already great but then developer Unknown Worlds went ahead and released the Eye Candy update which basically makes it look even better. The update adds:

  • Chromatic aberration
  • Bloom
  • Lens artefacts
  • Dithering
  • Motion blur
  • Colour grading
  • Depth of field

Does it mean you need a powerful Mac to run it?

Well, you'll need to meet at least the following system requirements:

  • Requires a 64-bit processor and operating system
  • OS: OS X 10.9 Mavericks
  • Processor: Intel Haswell 2 cores / 4 threads @ 2.5Ghz or equivalent
  • Memory: 4 GB RAM
  • Graphics: Intel HD 4600 or equivalent
  • Storage: 20 GB available space

For reference, Graphics are usually the main issue when it comes to running games. If you have Intel Iris Graphics integrated graphics or better, you should be fine.

You can find the game on Humble Bundle.

I can't find any Mac reviews of the game anywhere. Any word on how it plays on a Mac?

Unfortunately, I haven't been able to test it yet (don't own a copy and I have too many games to buy for different tests!). But if we do, I'll share the results here.

It is from Unknown Worlds Entertainments, nice guys. Their main game, Natural Selection 2 is a masterpiece but Mac version was put on hold sadly. I suppose this is a quality game.

Did not know it was from the same team that did Natural Selection 2. I never played it but heard many good things about it. Makes me want to try Subnautica even more now 🙂
