Rome: Total War isn’t the newest Total War you can play on macOS (in fact, the game’s even available for iPad now). Nonetheless, this is still one great game that has one clear advantage over the more modern Total War entries: Vey low system requirements.

Indeed, this is the game you should get if you have an older MacBook that basically struggles with most games. And to make it an even more realistic alternative, Feral Interactive updated Total War: Rome’s Mac version to version 1.3 which includes:

  • Now with Retina support
  • Graphical enhancements
  • Stability improvements and crash fixes
  • AI and game balancing improvements
  • Multiplayer compatible with all Mac versions (DVD, MAS & other download stores)
  • DVD no longer required in drive to play

The game has the following minimum system requirements:

  • OS: OS X 10.11.6
  • Processor: Intel 1.4 GHz
  • RAM: 512MB
  • Hard Disk: 10GB
  • Graphics: 128MB

Recommended requirements are the following:

  • OS: OS X 10.11.6 or higher
  • Processor: Intel 2.0 GHz
  • RAM: 2GB
  • Hard Disk: 10GB
  • Graphics: 256MB

For the record, there are newer Total War games, some of which are among the top Strategy games for Mac, but if you have an older machine that struggles with modern games, this could be a great compromise. Rome may look old but the gameplay is still lots of fun.
