Marvel Heroes for Mac and Windows has shut down...

Updated September 10, 2017: Marvel has decided to stop working with Gazillion Entertainment and shut down. Fans sensed something was coming. Weekly updates had stopped for a while and now everything has been confirmed in an email from Marvel:

We regret to inform our Marvel Heroes fans that we have ended our relationship with Gazillion Entertainment, and that the Marvel Heroes games will be shut down. We would like to sincerely thank the players who joined the Marvel Heroes community, and will provide any further updates as they become available.

Original story: Just yesterday, developer Gazillion Entertainment released a Mac beta client for its free-to-play Marvel Heroes MMORPG:

The wait is over as Marvel Heroes' Mac client is available in open Beta. You will now have access to all the same great content including the just-released Battle of Muspelheim Raid, Omega System and more.

Before you jump into the Beta (and download the massive 30 GB needed to play the game!), make sure you meet the minimum system requirements:

  • Graphics Card: ATI Radeon HD 6750M
  • VRAM: 512 MB
  • System RAM: 4 GB RAM
  • CPU: Core 2 Duo
  • Network Connection: 1 Mbps Network speed
  • Storage: 30* GB free
  • OS: OSX 10.8 (Mountain Lion)

The game plays a lot like Diablo 2 (which makes sense because Diablo 2’s co-creator, David Brevik, is the head of development) and promises to combine that frenetic gameplay style with a persistent MMO universe filled with Marvel characters.

On paper, this sounds amazing but the stiff progression system, repetitive combat and lacking end-game content make this whole affair rather disappointing…

But don’t just take my word for it! Remember, the game is free-to-play. If you want to test it out, give it a shot. You can download it here. The game will obviously encourage you to buy stuff (like the pro version, hero packs, and team packs) but it has enough free content to give you a real taste of the game.

And if you happen to really like it, come back and let us know in the comments section. It could be sweet to form a Mac-only group of heroes!
