Strategy game Factorio is officially coming to Mac this Month
Available on Steam Early Access since 2014, Factorio for Mac will be officially released on April 16, 2018.
Games entering and leaving Steam Early Access are usually nothing remarkable. But Factorio, the factory building strategy game, is a different story.
In Factorio, you land on an alien planet and have to build and maintain factories to survive and fight off alien enemies. You'll have to mine resources, research technologies, build infrastructure, and automate production. Featuring a top-down view and simplistic graphics, Factorio is all about the perfectly tuned mechanics and systems you can put in place to build impressive factories.
This gameplay video is two years old and the game looks better today, but it should still give you a good idea what the game is about.
Factorio has over 26,000 Overwhelmingly Positive user reviews on Steam and having played it myself, I can tell you it's really good. It's no surprise the game is considered an indie sensation in the same vein as Kerbal Space Program or Prison Architect.
Also, the game will see a price increase as soon as the game is officially released, going from $20 to $30. If this game remotely interests you, you better hurry!
Factorio on Mac: Everything you need to know
Factorio has supported MacOS since the very beginning and that support will, of course, carry on once the game is officially released.
As can be expected from a top-down strategy game with simple graphics, Factorio is a very forgiving game with low system requirements. I have played this game on airports on my 2016 13-inch MacBook Pro with integrated graphics and the game always ran great.
These are the game's system requirements:
- OS: macOS High Sierra, Sierra, OSX El Capitan, Yosemite, Mavericks
- Processor: Dual-core 3Ghz+
- Memory: 4 GB RAM
- Graphics: 512MB Video Memory
- Storage: 1 GB available space
- Additional Notes: Low sprite resolution and Low VRAM usage
You can find Factorio on Steam (for $20 until April 16 or $30 afterward).
