Rules

First of all, we would like to thank you for all the feedback you have sent our way. As pointed out by many of you, the criteria used here needs to be crystal clear in order to avoid “How could you not add XXXX game?”. These are the criteria used for the list below:

  • We only took into account “modern games”: They had to be released in the last 10 years on the Mac.
  • The best were selected based on many things: Reviews, PC Metacritic scores, personal favorites.

Feeling like your own personal favorites are missing but truly deserve a spot? Please let us know in the comments section (we do reply to ALL the comments)!

Note: Please note the links below are affiliate links, and at no additional cost to you. I will earn a commission if you decide to make a purchase. If you want to support Mac Gamer HQ, this is the easiest way to do it. That’s how I pay the bills!

  • Xiang Ji

It’s nice to have a list but the layout seems somehow broken at the end of it, and I cannot perform any filtering on the list(I’ve tried in multiple browsers). Please fix it. Thanks

    • http://macgamerhq.com/ Mac Gamer Ric

You are completely right, some code got in the way and was left unnoticed, thanks for the heads up! It was REALLY broke :S

    • http://macgamerhq.com/ Mac Gamer Ric

The game appears to run flawlessly, nice one! You should do some OS X native ones too 😉

  • shyataroo

rename to top 60 Modern Mac games and their expansions.

I see no Diablo 3 Reaper of souls, nor do I see a torchlight 2.

    • http://macgamerhq.com/ Mac Gamer Ric

Fair comment. Removing some expansions makes sense, yes. Reaper of Souls is not in it because I haven’t updated the list (but I will as it deserves a place) BUT Torchlight 2 needs to come out on the Mac before I can add it…..

      • shyataroo

Torchlight 2 virtualizes wonderfully, though, for those of us with VMware fusion or parallels. So it ALMOST counts.

        • shyataroo

Also I have to somewhat disagree with you on dragonage 2 belonging on this list, as it uses heavily recycled environments throughout the entire game and is somewhat lacking in several other aspects, when compared to the previous entry in the series.

          • shyataroo

I am also not seeing dungeon defenders, which as I will attest to any day of the week, is a shining jewel in mac gaming.

          • http://macgamerhq.com/ Mac Gamer Ric

I have to say, Dungeon Defenders feels a little too iOS for me…

          • Chris Tallant

THANK YOU! Finally someone else who thinks this way! I loaded Dungeon Defenders when it came out in a bundle with Hero Academy (or Hero Siege…I don’t remember anymore) and went.. “Don’t I already have these on my iPad?”

          • http://macgamerhq.com/ Mac Gamer Ric

You just get me man…. lol
I can see people loving that but with WoW, LoTRO and even Guild Wars 2, why play that??

          • Chris Tallant

I can see playing them on an iPad.. but I’d rather play Hearthstone.. or a game with a better point. However, I still can’t see why people still pay money to have their farms (or whatever the point to pay real money) in Farmville for.. so maybe I’m not the proper demographic.

          • http://macgamerhq.com/ Mac Gamer Ric

That’s a perfect example. At end the world is made of very different people…..

          • Chris Tallant

People enjoy playing what they want to lose themselves into.. I’m not going to judge. The fact that Candy Crush still makes millions a day baffles me, but I didn’t think of it first.

          • http://macgamerhq.com/ Mac Gamer Ric

Hey man, Sorry for the late reply. I completely agree with you on this. I should be looking for a good Dragon Age 2 replacement. It wasn’t close to what the original Dragon Age did.. Man how I loved that game. I almost melted by Aluminium Macbook Pro so much I played!

          • Chris Tallant

            Dragon Age 2 = Witcher 2?

          • http://macgamerhq.com/ Mac Gamer Ric

Witcher 2 is already on the list man.

          • Chris Tallant

And Witcher 3 is coming out soon.. If you put your CD keys into GoG’s site (for the DRM free version of the game, hint hint, wink wink..wait..) you get a nice discount on the pre-order for Witcher 3…

          • Chris Tallant

well.. CD keys for Witcher 1 and 2.. which everyone should already have on Steam since they’re going for $2 and $3.

            SO GET THEM NOW.

W2 runs like a power point presentation on my 2011 macbook pro with 16GB RAM and ATI Radeon 6750 w 1GB RAM. With Bootcamp it is playable. Good thing I got it on Steam, but still… it was one of those games that I got and never got around to playing. Just felt too awkward, the controls…

          • http://macgamerhq.com/ Mac Gamer Ric

Not the first time I hear that The Witcher 2 is too demanding on the Mac. Sadly, in some cases it is impossible to justify the poor performance on Mac vs Windows….

        • http://macgamerhq.com/ Mac Gamer Ric

LOL, sorry man but ALMOST is not enough, otherwise what is the point of dedicated mac gaming site? And with Reaper of Souls now out, I don’t miss Torchlight that much anymore…

        • Chris Tallant

Fusion doesn’t pass video card information to the VM box. Not wise for gaming… I fell into that trap.

  • http://macgamerhq.com/ Mac Gamer Ric

A big fan of MMOs aren’t you! Can’t please everybody but EVE Online could definitely take a spot here!

  • http://macgamerhq.com/ Mac Gamer Ric

And what about now? What’s your favorite modern Mac game?

    • http://www.animeister.com theanimaster

There is none. Let me reiterate MfJ’s sentiments: ONI was a GREAT game and for some reason there’s nothing like it on the Mac. The closest game to it in terms of gameplay is Blades of Time. Oni’s graphical style was anime-ish, which added to the charm.

On the PS4 we have Infamous: First Light and Infamous 2: Second Child which are the also very close to the 2nd-person combat sequences you had in Oni. Sigh. They should do a remake of it — and put it on the mac!!

Really, I don’t see why they didn’t just port it over.

Another game conspicuously missing from Intel macs is STUBBS: the Zombie. I had almost… ALMOST!!!! finished the game when my ol’ PowerPC iMac G5 decided to die forever — got a new motherboard and GFX card which gave me 3 more years — but then that died as well. So now I have these damn nightmares about the ending I never saw — and yet I don’t want to go onto YouTube to see the ending coz well… dammit!! I want to FINISH the game!! I don’t care how long it takes for them to port it or whatever — but I want to finish it on a Mac as well… but eh… maybe I should just get the PC version and play it all over with Bootcamp.

Which unfortunately, is yet another hit against mac gaming. Sorry, Ric. I’ll hold off as long as I can, but I need closure with that game.

  • Fum Baz

    So… where’s the list?

    • http://macgamerhq.com/ Mac Gamer Ric

Man, technical issue on the site, thanks for the heads up! The list is back up!

        Sweet.

Lol, seriously though, this list needs a BIG update. I will push it to 100 and be reassured, DotA2 will be there! (I did include it to my Top Free Mac games for a reason! http://www.macgamerhq.com/guides/best-free-mac-games/ )

BTW, what is your current favorite Mac game?

Looking for a great adventure game for the Mac? Try “A Mess O’ Trouble”. This classic game has recently been updated and revised for OS X and is now available in the Mac App Store.

I feel like Divinity Original Sin should be on this list.
After all, it won a couple of prices and is a really good game:
PC game of the year (GameSpot)
Best kickstarter of 2014 (Rock, Paper, Shotgun)
And a ton of good reviews with high scores.

Indeed, a very good game. The thing is, it cannot be considered as “modern” which is why it’s missing here…

Fair enough Ric, I didn’t see where “modern” was a criteria for great Mac games
